It is located in the province of Sfakion, in southern Chania and starts from the village of Impros, at an altitude of 700 meters, and ends in the village of Komitades. Its length is 11 kilometers and its crossing takes 3 to 4 hours. During the tourist season, a small fee is required upon entry to the “Porofarago” site.
The course of the gorge is downhill and very easy, so it is preferred by families with children. The natural environment is impressive with cypresses, prunes and maples growing between the rocks to give shade to walkers, most of the way. The hiker will encounter the site of “Aeroplano”, the place where a German plane crashed during World War II (the wreckage of which is in the War Museum in Askifou). Following the route you will pass the “Stenada”, the most impressive point of the gorge, where the sides are only 1.60 meters away while their height reaches 300 meters. Immediately after will be found the “Mesofaraggo”, a place of rest, where there is a Venetian cistern of water and the hut of the guard of the gorge. After an impressive narrowing in the location of Gremnaria, he will meet “Xepitira”, a large stone arch that is the trademark of the gorge. Continuing the course and after a few narrow passages you will reach the exit of the gorge, on the road network that connects Chora Sfakion with Frangokastello, where there are some taverns for food and rest.
Spring is a wonderful time to cross the gorge of Imbros because there are many blooming flowers and herbs, but do not forget to have enough water with you for the route, as there is no running water in the gorge.
The excursion to the gorge of Imbros can be combined with an excursion to one of the beautiful beaches of Frangokastello.
