The Samaria National Park is the largest gorge in Europe, with a length of 18 km of indescribable natural beauty. It is rich in flowers and famous Cretan herbs and in some places you can see crystal clear waters springing from its rocks. It is also the “home” of the protected Cretan Goat. The famous kri-kri that survives in the caves and in the steep ravines of the gorge has become familiar with the passage of so many visitors every year and you may be one of the lucky ones who will see it even from afar.
The gorge starts at an altitude of 1,250m from “Xyloskalo” or otherwise “Wooden Stairs” is downhill for most of it, with an average walking duration of 4 to 6 hours. The rocky path is parallel to the riverbed and its narrowest point is 2m wide.
The last part of the Park – after the so-called “Iron Gates” – is a route 3km under the strong sun of Crete. If you do not want to walk this part of the route, you can board a small bus that makes this distance to the beach of Agia Roumeli, for a small fee.
After reaching the village of Agia Roumeli, you can enjoy your swim in the Libyan Sea or your meal in one of the taverns of the village, until the afternoon, when the last boat departs for Chora Sfakion or Sougia and Paleochora. However, you always have the choice of accommodation, since Agia Roumeli has several rooms for rent.
You can see about the return itineraries from Agia Roumeli with the boats of ANENDYK.
